Giant Schnauzers - Dogs - Breed History
Giant Schnauzers are known throughout history as the Munich Schnauzer, Russian Bear Schnauzer, and Riesenschnauzer. It is thought to have come from crosses between dogs such as the black Great Dane, Bouvier des Flandres and the Standard Schnauzer. In German, the word "Schnauze" means "muzzle." The Giant Schnauzer, first used as a cattle-driving dog in Bavaria was later used as a guard dog by the police and military. The Giant Schnauzer excels at schutzhund and also makes a good companion dog.
The Giant Schnauzer was developed by workingmen who needed a dog to perform a specific task. The development of the Giant Schnauzer's powerful build was not accidental, although its striking good looks were an added attraction. Even today this dog is happiest when working, and is respected in many countries for its tireless service to the humans who respect its abilities.
The Giant Schnauzer is a separate breed from the Miniature and Standard. Their country of origin is Germany. Breeds were developed for specific work in the 1600s; this breed was used for herding sheep and cattle, and as a guard dog. Its coat was also influenced by weather and living conditions. Some of the breeds that were used in the development were the Standard Schnauzer, Great Dane, rough-haired sheep dogs and possibly the Bouvier des Flandres. The breed was not that well known until World War I when it was used for police training. Giant Schnauzers were recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1948.
