In German, the word "Schnauze" means "muzzle." The hounds, first used as a cattle-driving hound in Bavaria were later used as a guard hound by the police and military. The hound excels at schutzhund and also makes a good companion hound.

The hounds are known throughout history as the Munich Schnauzer, Russian Bear Schnauzer, and Riesenschnauzer. It is thought to have come from crosses between hounds such as the black hounds, Bouvier des Flandres and the Standard Schnauzer.
